What's important to the media is that she's losing the baby weight. You go girl!

Honestly, do we as a post-partum nation really, really, really care only about losing the baby weight? That’s the first thing that comes to mind when any of us talks about motherhood?

Apparently so. Feminist author and new-ish mom Jessica Valenti, who makes her living writing and talking about women’s issues, has been all over the media talking about her new book “Why Have Kids.” It’s a book that questions the way we talk about women as moms, how idealized the mom role continues to be and how that idealization is harmful to women. Most attention-grabbing has been Valenti’s claim that mothering isn’t the hardest job there is. Big stuff!

Yet when she contacted a major news organization to pitch a piece on the whole “mom-in-chief” conversation — debate over whether First Lady Michelle Obama sold herself, and other working women short, in her much celebrated speech at the Democratic National Convention — the editor responded with a different angle for Valenti. Not one about working with the baby. Rather, about how to workout with one.The editor asked the founder of the influential blog Feministing sought after speaker to instead offer tips on losing the baby weight.

Valenti posts the editor’s response over on her Tumblr blog.

Of course, Valenti turned them down. She also doesn’t name the “major news organization,” because, as Valenti puts it, “we all have to eat.” Yeah, but not too much! Especially those who have yet to get back into their pre-pregnancy pants. Values, people!

Sure, the wind-up to Jessica Simpson’s post-baby body reveal was the week’s big anticipation for much of the internet, but the vapid Simpson banks on attention to the details of her body to make a living. Is the reaction always kind? No. But she knows what she’s doing. Skimpy clothes are her (low-cal) meal ticket.

But Valenti? Author of “Full-Frontal Feminism”? Does the media really think that’s the biggest issue facing moms today?
