Planning an Emmys party this year? One of my all-time favourite shows, 30 Rock, has been nominated for an Emmy, and so I looked through old episodes to come up with inspiration for food that could be nibbled on the couch. There’s no shortage of Liz Lemon food scenes, but for some reason this cheesy blaster jingle stuck in my head, and I had to whip up a batch (rather than rely on Meat Cat). The first version I stuck to her description – topped hot dogs with grated Jack cheese, wrapped them in pizza dough and baked them. They were scrumptious, but it occurred to me that they were like extreme pigs in blankets, and I could dial it down and make better, slightly healthier version, with grated cheese in whole wheat biscuit dough. Hey, every bit helps! They were fab.
I couldn’t bring myself to go so far as to use crescent rolls – I instead mixed up a batch of biscuits, ditching the berries and tossing a handful of grated cheddar in with the dry ingredients before adding the milk, then rolled the dough out about 1/2″ thick and cut it into strips, which I wrapped around halved hot dogs and baked on a baking sheet at 350F until golden.
We generally aren’t much of a hot dog-eating family (much to my 7 year old’s utter disappointment – were it up to him they would constitute our breakfast, lunch and dinner), but I’d make these again. My husband suggested wrapping the cheesy biscuit dough around pepperoni sticks (our favourites are honey-garlic bison sticks) or smokies, which is a fantastic idea indeed. They weren’t as heavy as a hot dog in full bun (or pizza dough), and their small size made them perfect for nibbling on the couch – with ketchup and mustard for dipping, and some baby carrots, straight from the garden.
