When choosing my daughter’s name one of the most important factors to me was that it, like a fine wine, would age well.
I imagined someone using the name at all ages, including as a senior citizen. In fact, I have a full-on obsession with old lady names. Love ‘em. Most of ‘em, anyway. Some I still can’t wrap my brain around. But give me an Ada, Alice, Hazel or Pearl.
I ultimately went with Violet, which feels gentle and old-fashioned and works well for any age.
So can a name be timeless and trendy even when it feels like a contradiction in terms? As it turns out, yes. The seven names you’re about to see, as the Huffington Post reports “have deep roots, yet are also listed on the official U.S. roster of names that were the fastest-rising in the past year.
Eloise: According to Nameberry.com, Eloise has joined the band of other popular El-starting names, initiated by Ella.
Cora: “A soft and lovely vintage beauty that has been restored to popularity, rising 72 places this year. Cora has classic literary roots as the heroine of James Fenimore Cooper’s Last of the Mohicans and as an alternate name for the mythological Persephone, but modern parents are probably most familiar with Cora via Lady Cora Crawley of television’s Downton Abbey“, according to the Huffington Post.
Cecilia: This one might be my favorite of the bunch. It’s also Jim and Pam’s choice for their TV baby on The Office.
Alice: The name Alice has always felt very plain to me and yet I find myself really liking it more and more. It’s simple, sweet and beautiful. Apparently a lot of others agree as it’s quietly rising in popularity over the last couple years.
Ada: Forget the super trendy Ava and consider Ada. As Huffington Post reports, “Though it lacks Ava’s obvious glamour-girl pedigree, Ada has a more vintage feel and lots of literary cred.”
Hazel: It was a name considered kind of quirky when Julia Roberts chose it for her daughter in 2004. But ever since then Hazel is shooting up the charts.
Olive: It’s the logical successor to the super popular Olivia.
