steak salad 200x300 Fighting Anemia During Pregnancy: 8 Power Foods To Help YouBeing anemic is something I’ve battled with for the last ten years; since my first child. It’s rough. I fight off constant exhaustion and don’t have the greatest energy level anymore but, I get by. Well, this week, I hit an all-time low. My anemia level dropped to an 8.7. How low is that? It should be above 15. Yeah, pretty low.

With that said, my follow-up doctors appointment tomorrow will be all about seeing an hematologist and doing iron transfusion before delivery. This is something I’ve never had to do in pregnancy. With my last pregnancy, I was at a 9 with talks about iron infusions and an appointment scheduled but than ended up going early and my iron jumped back up to 10.5 – a point where I didn’t need infusions. With this  pregnancy and most I take 2 prescription iron pills a day and yet I still can’t get by without needing an infusion. Not a happy camper right now as I was really hoping to just enjoy the last 8 weeks of my pregnancy with smooth sailing. With that said, I am hoping to turn to good food for this one in hopes to beat the odds and perhaps get my iron up enough to where I don’t need infusions as they will test again right before.

After the jump, browse through ten power foods that are iron rich. I guess this will be my diet in rotation the next few weeks.

    Nuts and Seeds
Sunflower and sesame are top on my list. A great snack with a high iron content. I love that I can pack them in my purse for a quick snack on-the-go or top them on my salad.

    Bran Flakes
Another one I’ve always loved! I was so excited to see them on the list of fortified breakfast cereals to boost your iron. Having just one serving of Bran Flakes gives you around 18 mg of Iron. However, the typical absorption rate is only 10% to 15% of dietary iron so drink a glass of good ole’ OJ with your flakes to boost absorption. The perfect breakfast these days!

    Egg Yolks
While eggs are’t the highest food in iron, egg yolks can be a boost. Think about making a spinach and egg omelet for an iron rich breakfast.

I actually love spinach. Is that weird? It’s one of my favorites. I love mixing it with pasta and cottage cheese but also, having it on a salad. Spinach is one of the top rich in iron veggies to stock-up on.

    Red Meat
I am definitely not a vegetarian but we really don’t eat a lot of red meat in my house because my 9 year old won’t touch it. She loves animals. With that said, this is something I am just going to have to stock up on. Per my doctor, it’s steak, 3X a week. I am pretty sure my husband is super-excited about this one!

  • thumbs orange juice Fighting Anemia During Pregnancy: 8 Power Foods To Help You

    Great Tip!
Like I stated earlier, don’t forget the vitamin C, like orange juice. If you iron-rich foods along with vitamin c filled foods, your body can better absorb the iron. Also, from personal experience, have your doctor check your Vitamin D levels. In the past, I was Vitamin D deficient which can cause your body not to absorb the iron.
