My eyes are still burning from the tears. I feel like a horrible parent.
On Sunday Trig was out for a run and Raffi and I were packing up the car to get ready for the ride home to Philly. The ground was wet with dew so I put him in the stroller as I strategically packed the car like I was playing a Tetris game. We have an old car and our trunk is very small. Once everything was in a perfect puzzle it was time to jam in the stroller. I took Raffi out of it and had no place to safely put him. The asphalt was hot, the grass was wet, and no one was home.
Like I’ve done a few times before I placed him in the backseat to play. I closed the door and quickly ran to the trunk to jam in the stroller. My keys were sitting on the front seat and the front doors were open. Maybe 15 seconds passed, and in a moment of idiocy I decided it was better to shut all the other doors before grabbing Raffi.
I did that and went to retrieve him but suddenly all the doors were locked. Instead of remaining calm I panicked. I screamed “Oh my god! Help! I locked my son in the car” as loud as I could while sobbing uncontrollably. Not 25 seconds had passed since I had put him down.
I quickly moved into action and called my husband before calling 911. Exactly 2 minutes passed from when I hung up before the fire truck and ambulance arrived.
I know because all I could do was stare at my timer as each second ticked on. Raffi was fine and playing, and when they began to work on busting in he actually climbed up on the seat and pressed his nose to the window to see what they were doing. Unfortunately he slipped and fell to the floor, but after crying for a second he climbed back up to watch again.
The firefighter, a young gorgeous man from my hometown, was laughing at Raffi as he tried to climb in the front seat when he saw the metal hanger-like item sneak in the window to unlock the door. He loves shiny things and loves sticks, remember?
10 minutes later, about 13 minutes after I locked him in, my boy was in my arms. I knew he knew I was upset because he allowed me to hug him a little too tight for a little too long.
I made a mistake and even now, 2 days later, I am really upset about it. Where was my head? Why did the doors lock when they are not supposed to with the keys in the car? Why didn’t I wait until my husband came back from his run to pack the car?
I am so thankful he is ok and the Cranston Fire Department reacted so quickly and efficiently. I know I’ll never do that again.
Have you ever had a bad mommy moment?
