Screen shot 2012 08 12 at 3.11.09 PM 300x139 The Crying Games: How I Balled My Eyes Out During the 2012 OlympicsThe Olympics are wrapping up tonight, and while I’ve been completely addicted these past two weeks, I’m ready for the closing ceremonies.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved every single second of the games; but I’m tired, and I need to get my daily routine back in order. I’ve been completely 100% engrossed and invested in every sport, staying up way past midnight every night watching the NBC coverage.
Looking back over the past two weeks, I think I’ve cried every single day. Typically, I’m not much of a crier, but these Olympic games have tugged at my heartstrings something fierce. Watching these Olympic games in a postpartum state of mind definitely wasn’t something my heart was prepared for.

Olympic moments that made me weep:

1. The thankful athlete. Specifically, swimmers Brendan Hansen winning the bronze medal in the 100 Breaststroke, and Missy Franklin winning gold in the 100 Backstroke, both giving immediate heartfelt shout outs to their folks.

2. The Target Commercial. You know the one, the one where they show video of kids finding out they got accepted into college. I’ve seen this commercial no less than 50 times, and I still get choked up every single time. Well played, Target.

3. The P&G commercials. Specifically, the “to their Mom’s they’ll always be kids” commercial. This commercial has so much truth to it, I’ll always see Paul as my little boy, no matter what his life might have in store for him.

4. The crying parent. While there were too many proud and emotional parents to count during these Olympic games, the one got me the most was the image of Kathleen Hersey’s dad sobbing, right before her swimming event, the 200 butterfly. Kathleen’s mother passed away this past January from colon cancer, and clearly her dad was overcome with emotion right before she dove into the pool. In her only Olympic event, Hersey came in 4th place, which was heartbreaking to watch. I wanted her to medal so badly!

5. The happy crying athlete. Seeing track star Felix Sanchez Juegos break down on the medal stand after winning the gold. Back in 2008, his grandmother tragically passed away just hours before his event, the 400-meter hurdles. At this Olympics, he dedicated his medal to his grandmother’s memory.

6. The sad crying athlete. My heart went out to gymnast Jordyn Wieber when the whole world watched her fail to advance to the women’s all-around final competition. As a mother myself, I just wanted to shield her from the cameras and wrap her up in a big hug.

The triumph, the agony, the guts and the glory. I’m absolutely addicted to all aspects of the Olympic games, even if they make me cry for 14 days straight.

Did you cry anytime throughout the Olympic games? I would love to know the moment that made you shed a tear.
