Now that the sun is glaring and the heat is on, there’s no denying summer is here … and will be over before we know it.
If you haven’t already, it’s time to step into that bathing suit, ladies!
I know what you mamas-to-be are thinking – swimsuits were stressful enough pre-pregnancy and now the usual “trouble zones” are amplified tenfold.
The key takeaway for maternity swimwear – just like anything else – is that a woman must know her own body. It’s all about personal preferences, so in the end, wear what makes you most comfortable.
To help you achieve that confident state of mind, follow these guidelines:
The Swimsuit
Go with a two-piece: It’s not intuitive, so believe me when I tell you that a two-piece is actually more flattering than a one-piece. For the same reason form-fitting clothing looks better on a pregnant figure than over-sized silhouettes, two-piece suits enhance – and support – your new curves best.
Try a tankini: If you’re uncomfortable baring your belly, try a tankini. They provide the security of extra coverage while still drawing attention to the right places. I especially love versions with convertible straps so you can go halter or strapless. No matter what, you must support the bust!
Go bold!: The pool and beach are ideal locations for experimenting with bold prints. I loved playing with the bright stripes, florals and ikat patterns in this season’s Liz Lange Maternity for Target collection.

Accessories
Take cover: – A chic beach look doesn’t end with the swimsuit – tie the outfit (yes, it’s an outfit!) together with a classic sarong tied above or below the bump. Tunics or polo-style dresses are great cover-up alternatives as well.
Top it off: Hats are having a major moment right now. Try pairing a straw hat or fedora with a sundress for a sophisticated, sun-shielding look.
Ditch the heels: Heels at the pool or to the beach are an absolute no-no. There are plenty of cute flip-flops available, so please choose appropriate footwear.
What are your tips for looking (and feeling) great at the pool or the beach?
Here are a few more summer things I’m loving right now …
- Essie “Clambake” nailpolish: I’ve declared this fresh orangey-red my official shade for summer!
- La Roche-Posay sunblock: Buy it – you’ll be happy you did! I think we all know by now that sun protection is important for everlasting beauty.
- Anything red, white and blue: This combo isn’t just for July 4 fireworks – I’m rocking an Americana style all summer long.
