THE MOST DECORATED OLYMPIAN OF ALL TIME!
It’s hard to believe any longer that there could be a rivalry between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, considering that Lochte swam in the relay that earned Phelps the title of Most Decorated Olympian of All Time. ESPN gives an interesting summation of the relationship Phelps and Lochte share: “The two superstars whose rivalry provided the biggest cliffhanger coming into the Summer Games are friendly, respectful teammates who play cards on the road at major meets, but seeing them sharing space in public outside the pool deck seemed novel.” Lochte led off the 4x200m freestyle relay Tuesday and Phelps swam the final leg. Before taking the water Phelps (jokingly but totally seriously) asked his fellow swimmers to give him a big lead so that he could achieve his goal of winning a 19th medal.
Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated says, “There actually is an argument to be made that Phelps is not” the greatest Olympian who has ever lived, but he doesn’t believe it. Farber writes, “Phelps has won 19 medals, a record 15 of them gold, including this swim in the 4×200 free relay. Game, set and — pretty much — match. There is no “yes, but,” capable of sustaining prolonged debate.” Farber adds, quite definitively, “Phelps started his swim into posterity when he finished fifth in the 200 butterfly in Sydney as a 15-year-old. He will end competitive swimming in London a dozen years later with perhaps six more medals …. Please, nothing short of drowning diminishes his legacy.”
So be careful you don’t wear all your medals into the water, Michael! Other than sinking from the weight of all that bling, you’re good. No matter what Kanye or anyone else says.
