What to do for the Olympics!

My daughter is six-year-old, the last time there was a great big lavish Olympic ceremony was when she was two. My husband and I were glued to the TV watching the stunning Beijing Olympics opener, but our daughter was fast asleep. She missed the whole thing and was too young to truly comprehend what was happening anyways. This Olympics is the first one she can be an actively watch and enjoy, so we’re going to make tonight’s festivities into a Chanel family event with foods, drinks and friends. What are we planning to do?

Dinner:
I love a themed dinner. I have yet to make a final decision but I’m thinking something London themed. Perhaps fish and chips or bangers and mash and for the adults we’ll have some Fuller’s or Samuel Smith’s ales on hand.

Olympic Dessert
From mutli-colored donuts to cupcakes with Union Jack flags, offering an Olympic themed dessert is a great way to celebrate. You can get some delicious ideas from Ucreateparties.com right here.

Color in Flags:
I’ll be offering a couple different flags for the kids to color in. A United Kingdom one (available for download here ) and a United States one (available for download here).  We’ll try to finish up the American flag before the US team walks in the parade so the kids can cheer on the team with their own USA homemade pride.

Get out the Atlas:
There will be a few huge groups of athletes from countries with big Olympic dreams like the United States and China. But then there will be all those smaller countries with just a couple of participants. Have an atlas (or the internet) close at hand so you can find out more about these far flung places.

Opening Ceremony Bingo:
Keep the kids (and you) engaged by playing a game of opening ceremony bingo! Thirty Handmade Days has a great downloadable that you can print out right here.

Discuss Afterwards:
One of the best things about watching an event like this with your kids is to discuss it afterwards. There are several things you can ask them like, “who had the most athletes,” “whose outfits did you like the most,” and “what was your favorite part of the ceremony.”

How will you be celebrating the opening ceremonies?
