There has been concern in recent years over microwave popcorn – the additives and flavorings added to the kernels as well as the use of teflon in the lining of the bags; the issue has to do with PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid, also known as C8), which is also used to make Teflon and other stain-and stick-resistant materials. While there has been no study proving a direct link between microwave popcorn bags and a risk to human health, most of us aspire to using as few chemicals as possible in the preparation of our food, for the sake of our own well-being as well as a healthy environment.
Fortunately, you can make your own microwave popcorn using plain brown paper lunch bags, popcorn kernels and oil, saving money and excess packaging while controlling exactly what goes into your bowl of popcorn. Simply pop kernels in a paper bag, sealed by folding the top over twice or securing with a small piece of tape.
Homemade Microwave Popcorn
Adapted from AllRecipes
1/2 cup unpopped popcorn kernels
1 tsp. vegetable oil
salt to taste
In a small cup, mix together the unpopped popcorn, oil and salt and pour into a brown paper lunch bag, and sprinkle in the salt. Fold the top of the bag over twice to seal.
Cook in the microwave at full power like you would store-bought microwave popcorn, for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes, or until the popping slows to about 2 seconds between pops.
Carefully open the bag to avoid steam, and pour into a bowl to serve.
