I was so sad while strapping him into his new size that I cried. Henry definitely needed the bigger size (a sure size diapers are too small – little red marks form on their chubby legs!), but Size 1 meant that he was officially getting bigger and growing up.
Stay little forever!
Caring for a newborn is a funny thing. You know, intellectually, that they are getting bigger. They feel heavier in your arms; they take up slightly more space in the bassinet. Their onesies start to look tighter and tighter – like little muscle shirts.
So I knew Henry was growing. The six-pound, eleven-ounce peanut that I took home from the hospital looked healthy and rosy. But there was something about opening that package of Huggies Size 1 diapers and seeing how well they fit that made me weep. Size 1 today, Size 3 tomorrow. Watching him outgrow those baby diapers might be the biggest everyday diaper challenge of ‘em all.
I’m happy he’s so healthy, but a very selfish part of me wishes he would just stay little forever. It’s true what they say – the years are long but the days are short. I better enjoy every moment of every day – before I know it, he’ll be out of diapers entirely!
Farewell, Size N diapers. Hello, future.
