You're naming me after a boy band?
I always enjoy reading the hottest baby names even though I’m officially done with naming any babies myself. I like the creativity involved and the variations of spellings, plus I love many of the traditional names, too.
This year’s list so far for 2012 has left me a little let-down, though. They tend to focus on teen pop culture. Movies such as the Hunger Games and the assorted vampire sagas, along with tween boy bands, weigh heavily in the top selections.
While they might be popular right now at this moment in time, I can’t see them having much staying power. Of course, people don’t just pick a name for their child based on popularity. Many people actually don’t want to choose a name that any other child has, which can be tough.
Here are the top 5 hottest baby names for 2012 so far:
Senna/Cinna: The female/male names increased by 1500 percent! Senna is from Twilight and Cinna is from Hunger Games.
Niall: C’mon you know that tween boy band, One Direction, don’t you? I’ll give you a hint: “That’s what makes you beautiful. Na na na na na na na na.” Niall is the blond haired kid from Ireland. OK, now you’ll have that song in your head all day!
Arya: This name has gone up 800 percent in recognition of Arya Stark from Game of Thrones.
Decimus: Really. This name takes off from two popular movies: The Hunger Games again, and Gladiator. It seems like a whole lot of name for one little baby though, doesn’t it?
Gatsby: This name isn’t new obviously, but in former years was based on the popularity of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic. Now the hype behind the name will involve Leonardo DiCaprio who plays the lead character in Gatsby to be released in December. I admit the trailer for this looks like one that I would actually go to the movies to see, but name my child? No.
