I am 20 weeks pregnant. Over the weekend I had two sips of my husband’s red wine. It’s the first time I’ve had any alcohol during the pregnancy, but I enjoyed those two sips immensely and (gasp!) may even do it again.
I know alcohol and pregnancy is a polarizing issue. Shoot, y’all left over 1000 comments last week when Rebecca posted about a server who refused to bring a pregnant gal a glass of wine in a restaurant. “That is way too uptight,” many of you wrote. “There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a glass of wine while pregnant.” But others felt it was the restaurant’s right to refuse to serve wine. “They also have the right to refuse service to anyone…maybe it’s their policy not to serve pregnant women. She can drink on her own private time.” And some of you felt the woman should not be drinking at all. Period.
I fall pretty much in the gray area of this argument. I don’t judge people who drink (within reason) while pregnant. I feel pretty certain that a few glasses of wine are not going to hurt anything. That said, I tend to err on the side of caution and, until last weekend, have never had a drop of alchohol while pregnant. (This is my third pregnancy.)
What changed my mind? I think it’s a combination of being much more laid back with my third pregnancy, repeated conversations with my OB (who feels a few glasses of wine are fine), and this study that came out last week. The study says, in no uncertain terms, light to moderate drinking during pregnancy has no effect on intelligence, attention or self-control in children.
And the kicker? Light to moderate drinking is defined as up to eight drinks per week. That’s more than I drink when I’m not pregnant!
You can read the details of the study, but it’s pretty comprehensive. More than 1600 pregnant women. Controlled for other factors like age, maternal intelligence and smoking. Conducted over a six year period.
Is it enough to make me feel comfortable drinking eight drinks per week? No. But I don’t do that anyway. But does it reinforce what I already believed — a few drinks (or sips, in my case) during pregnancy are not going to hurt anything? It does.
Do you agree with this study? Did you drink at all while pregnant?
