When my daughter, May, had her first birthday, it was quite a celebration. There must have been 30 people at least, crammed into our little flat. There was a banquet of food – so much that we subsisted on it for a week after. And, there was literally a bathtub full of booze: wine, beer, champagne. I even made a homemade cake with a frosted monkey on top. It was pretty awesome and I am no Lindsay Weiss, let me tell you.
We had a lot to celebrate. That we all – particularly May – survived the year. That our marriage survived. That our friends and family didn’t turn their backs on us during the hard times, but rallied around us. They deserved that celebration too.
As if that wasn’t enough, we did it all over again when I visited my family in the States. More friends. More food. More everything including a new monkey cake, this time baked by my mother.
My baby boy, Ieuan, has his first birthday in just two small weeks. This time I admit, I haven’t given his birthday much thought. I know it is coming. I know I have to do something. But, what that is and how big it will be? No idea. I don’t even think we want to do anything “big” this time. It’s a bit late to plan a major party anyway. Plus, there is the cleaning, shopping, cooking and general preparing that I am very reluctant to dive into.
I feel guilty about it and I don’t feel guilty about it. I’m both. I don’t work on Ieuan’s birthday, so we will probably do something special together and then end with a (possibly homemade) cake with May and his father that night at home. Later, we will celebrate with his Nana in Wales (she came down for May’s party last time) and his American family on our visit in August.
But, on July 5th, it will be pretty low-key. And (I think) I’m okay with that.
