Bus monitor Karen Huff Klein was brought to tears by a group of 12 to 15-year-olds, bullying with taunts about her weight on their recent ride to school in Greece, New York. In a maddening, heartbreaking video that has gone viral since its June 19 posting, the 69-year-old is verbally attacked for over 10 minutes, with some comments hitting harder than even the students could have known.
Newscaster Patrice Walsh, who interviewed the bus monitor reported via Twitter, “Karen Klein said one comment hurt the most — kids said ‘you’re so ugly your kid should kill themselves’ Her son took his life 10 yr ago.”
For her part, Karen Huff Klein, amazingly, came to the bullying students’ defense. In an interview she shared, “They weren’t that bad all year. They just had one day. I don’t know what possessed them. I hope that this might help other people, that’s what I really hope. To go though all this for nothing would not be satisfactory.”
The local police department as well as the school district have launched an investigation into the behavior of four particular students, who, ironically enough, now need protection of their own. Patrice Walsh explained, “Greece Police say they are concerned for safety of students involved and may put officers outside their homes.”
Just who is this bus monitor named Karen Huff Klein the world is now talking about? Well, it turns out she’s a graduate of Greece Olympia High School herself, having donned cap and gown in 1962. Her Facebook description reveals, “Still working for Greece, unless I come into lots of money I will continue to work….I enjoy it also. I have been a widow for almost 17yrs.”
Karen Huff Klein is also now a woman who is on the receiving end of human kindness — and may soon be either taking one serious vacation or considering retirement! Users of the site Reddit, who had worked to uncover where and when the video was taken, have set up a vacation fund for the bullied bus monitor.
In a matter of hours the initial goal of $5,000 was blown completely out of the water. The tally, which likely be out of date in the time it takes you to read this post, currently stands at $44,686.
Three cheers for humanity, and the Internet at large!
To be perfectly honest, I didn’t watch the entire 10 minute Karen Klein video. My excuse is that my two young, early school-age children are in the same room as me. The truth is, it just makes me hurt.
If given the chance I would say this to the bullies: You have so, so much to learn.
To Karen Huff Klein I would say this: Humanity’s love is larger than its evil, even if it doesn’t always feel that way. I hope you’re starting to feel that now.
