There are so many brilliant crafts and projects I want to try these days, thanks to Pinterest.
But I also have two little boys who don’t leave me with much time for demolition, intricate painting, or even the sewing lessons I’ve been yearning to take.
And yet, that’s hardly an excuse to give up on the idea entirely. There are plenty of projects that are fulfilling and do-able within the time constraints of nap times and after kids’ bedtimes. I went in search of ten good ones and had a very hard time winnowing a top 10 list from the scores of projects I found.
Apply a wall decal growth chart
This would make a great afternoon project for a rainy afternoon.

Make modular toy storage
This kind of casing is one of the easiest woodworking projects to do — I can attest from experience. It is also easily broken up into 30 minute increments. If you have the tools, this is a wonderful way to add elegant toy storage to a child\’s room or play room.

Repurpose old furniture into a toy kitchen
The internet abounds with tutorials showing how to turn old bedside tables and random small cabinets into delightful play kitchens.

Kid car wash
With summer here, it\’s the perfect time to tackle an outdoor project that will yield hours of entertainment. My husband and I tackled this very project last summer in less than an hour – that\’s ours pictured at the top of the post. The neighborhood kids have all been asking when the car wash will be open for business again! I highly recommend.

Make a family cookbook
It\’s very easy to get stuck in a recipe rut. The process of actually creating your own cookbook will not only force you to mix up your menu a bit, but will yield a book in which every recipe is liked by your family AND is fun to use.

Create family art
Simple white paint hand prints on a black – or colorful – background look fantastic. This easy project involves the whole family and can be done in one afternoon and will add a bit of flair to a gallery wall anywhere in the house.

Fashion a family board book
Imagine how much more fun night time would be if you had a board book all about your family in the mix. This project is also perfect for working moms who have to travel a bit – your presence is still there even if you\’re 1,000 miles away.

Hang a family vacation cork board map
My family has one of these hanging in the play room. It didn\’t take long to make and our boys love interacting with it. Our goal is to hit all 50 states by the time the boys head to college.

Quilt pillows using baby clothes
Save the sweet memories of your babies by turning clothes they\’ve outgrown into a quilted pillow like this one. Make one for each child and they can enjoy it for a lifetime.

Make a cool kids swing from an old rocking chair
If you have a tree in your yard that can support one, a swing is a must-have for childhood! This gorgeous concoction was made from an old rocking chair.

If you’re hankering to do something, as a rule of thumb, look for projects that meet the following criteria:
1. Are small enough to tackle in one sitting or in 30 minute increments over a few days.
2. Can be done alone OR tackled by the entire family.
3. Will measurably enrich your family’s shared experience or environment
And of course, spend a little time upfront organizing yourself before diving in. It’s amazing how much ten or fifteen minutes of project planning can save you in terms of time, money and heartache. Measure twice, cut once as my carpenter dad likes to remind me.
