Heather & Whitney
posted in Life & Home
Many years ago, my friend Lisa gave me a small galvanized tin bucket full of orange things for my birthday. It included orange hairclips, peach lipgloss, coral nail polish, and a coordinating card. It was very sweet and the little pail, accented by an orange ribbon around its brim, still sits on my bathroom shelf, holding all my hair accessories. Ever since I’ve always loved gifts where the container is part of the present — and the permission it gives you to combine a pile of ordinary items into special packages.
Housewarming gift
If you follow us at our own blog, Rookie Moms, you may know that Heather just bought a new house — or rather, an old house. When I saw that my fellow BabyCenter contributor Kristina had pinned this photo, I was charmed. Courtesy of Martha Stewart (or her minions), the idea for a bucket filled with necessities for a new home, strikes me as brilliant. No one wants knicknacks, but you can’t really wrap something as practical as a power strip as a gift on it’s own.
Baby shower gift
The same could be said of Desitin as a baby shower gift: it’s not exactly adorable. But, put it in a cute container along with infant Motrin, Orajel, a thermometer, nail clippers and other practical necessities and it might be the most useful gift the expectant parents receive.
Alternatively, a bucket gift for a baby shower could be focused on things mom needs. I found this one on Pinterest.

Father’s Day gift
A couple of years ago, I used Martha Stewart’s printable labels (damn, she’s good!) to make a bunch of treats for my husband look special.

When I saw this bucket of six mismatched beers, I thought it was a perfect, consumable (ie clutter-free) gift for my husband. And you can always use another container around the house or in the shed, right?

I might go back to those Martha Labels for a bucket of beer and snacks this year, but you could use golf balls, tees and socks, shaving products, or kitchen gadgets, depending on your dad’s interests.
Have you ever put this style of bucket gift together?
