Whether you’re eight or eighty, Disney World is a magical place. Even the most reluctant of guests (like my husband) end up begging for more.
But between missed naps, sugar overload, huge crowds, hot, sticky weather, and endless stimulation – the happiest place on earth can also be also be the most overwhelming if you’re not careful.
After making two treks with two preschoolers in a little over a year, I’ve made just about every mistake you can make. So before you go down the same path – here are 10 tips on how to minimize tantrums and enjoy your time at Disney!
1. Consider everything when picking your dates.
In addition to avoiding insanely busy times like Spring Break, it’s also good to think about things like your time of the month. Not kidding. Hot weather, massive crowds, cranky kids and PMS are a deadly mix. Just ask my husband and the kid behind me who kept hitting my backpack in line for Star Tours.
2. Choose your hotel wisely.
Don’t make the mistake of saying, “The room doesn’t matter. We’ll be at the parks all day.” No, you won’t. And being in a cramped space with cranky overstimulated kids (and adults) is no fun. If at all possible, spring for an adjoining room or a suite of some kind. It’s pricier but makes a big difference if you’re there for more than a few days.
I’m a big fan of Disney Resort hotels because of the great customer service, extended park hours, themed rooms, kid-centric pools, and close proximity to the parks. Just make sure explore your surroundings and ask questions. We had no idea until the last day that our hotel was within walking distance of Epcot. A huge missed opportunity. Would have loved to pop on over France for a nice latte each morning.
3. Make a plan.
Before you even think about buying your tickets you must accept that there is no way you can do everything you want to do at Disney World in one trip! It’s not possible. Take some time in advance to prioritize the things you want to see and then put together a plan. And don’t forget to schedule at least two days of down time at the pool. Everyone, including you, will need a chance to relax and recharge.
4. BRING A STROLLER!
This year, I was dead set against bringing a stroller. I was feeling darn good about that plan until day 3 when my 43lb 3-year old decided he was done walking. Done. And after a day of carrying Mr. Lead Bones around I happily shelled out $50 for a lovely umbrella stroller in the gift shop. At that point, I would have paid $500. So, please. Even if you don’t think you need it, bring it. No, really. Do it.
5.Ask your hotel about special perks.
About half way through our trip we found out we could check all of our luggage and get our boarding passes at the hotel at no extra charge. Anyone who has carried 8 bags a stroller and a kid from the rental car return to the ticket counter knows that this is a life-changing perk.
6. Get a FASTPASS for crying out loud.
A FASTPASS is a complimentary service that saves your place in line for a ride while you enjoy the rest of the theme park. You just go up, stick your park ticket in a machine and it gives you a pass to come back at a certain time when you can then cut to the front of the line. It is fast, easy and free. And yet, people still stand in line. Don’t be one of those people.
7.Wear comfortable shoes
I hate the way my legs look in short and tennis shoes. It’s hideous. But I hate bleeding feet and blisters more. Don’t give into the temptation to wear flip flops to the parks. You’ll be sorry.
8. Is your kid a Star Wars lover? Get on the list for theStar Wars Jedi Training Academy at Hollywood Studios!
This is a 30-minute live show in which kids ages 4-12 train to be Jedis and have a light saber duel with THE Darth Vader. My boys wanted to do it so badly but we didn’t get there early enough to get on the list. They were crushed, until they learned that Darth was too chicken to fight the Freeman Bros.
9. Don’t be afraid to push your child past his or her comfort zone
There’s a delicate balance between knowing when and when not to push your child to experience something new. This year, we agreed to help them get beyond their fears, even if it meant dealing with a few tears. And wouldn’t you know it, the two things that scared them the most (Splash Mountain and the Haunted Mansion) were also their favorites.
And finally …
10. Always remember … you are there to have fun!!
