Last week I had the good fortune of getting to know Maryam Montague, the celebrated author of Marrakesh by Design and author of the beautiful blog MyMarrakesh.com.
I was inspired by her tale of living in Morocco and perhaps by the middle eastern cooking tear I’ve been on lately. This Afghan dish is divine, and this Moroccan Tagine has become a staple of ours.
As Maryam says in her book:
In a world filled with beige interiors, Morocco is the perfect antidote: a refuge for addicts of saturated color, a haven for devotees of intricate pattern, a destination for admirers of striking architecture.
As I lingered in my son’s beige and brown nursery this morning, I got a little wistful. My mind wandered as he leafed through his Lightning McQueen book for the 10,000th time. I daydreamed of of Marrakesh and what kind of nursery he might have if I dared to let my inner bohemian out.
There are so many ways to add just a dash of Moroccan flair to a nursery. I have scoured Myraym’s beautiful book and the interwebs and captured a mere eighteen (of the trillion) wonderful ideas for bringing the rich colors, bohemian charm, and vibrant patterns of Morocco to your child’s room.
Leather poufs
Nothing says Morocco more than a pouf. They come in a glorious rainbow of colors. But even adding a white pouf to an all-white nursery does something magical.

Tile light switch plate
Bring a hint of the brightly colored tiles into your baby\’s room with a beautiful hand crafted tile light plate. It\’s affordable and glamorous.

Wall Stencil
Stencils are an affordable (if time-consuming) way to add considerable flair to a room. Visit Etsy

Window frames
Although your nursery may not face a glamorous courtyard, you can fake it. Use three empty Moroccan frames as windows to a glamorous life…

Bring in bright bumpers
Crafty blogger Sweeter Than Cupcakes has a marvelous bumper tutorial that takes you through the steps of creating your own. Don\’t shy away from bright prints!

Diaper Bowl
Rather than keeping your diapers and diaper accessories, like Desitin, in a souless plastic container, opt for a colorful telephone wire bowl.

Moroccan Pendant Light
This simple pendant light offers a hint of Moroccan style without being overbearing.

Dhurrie Rug
The beauty of geometric patterns from Morocco is that they feel both modern and exotic. This yellow dhurrie rug would bring cheer and sophistication to any nursery.

Embroidered Cushions
Throw pillows in a corner to create a reading or play nook. It\’s exotic and totally functional at once.

Add Flair with Picture Frames
These hand-painted frames from Etsy bring just the right level of saturated color and pattern. Even if you had nothing else \”Moroccan\” – these would do the trick.

Moroccan Glider
Any glider can be dressed up with a geometric pattern – whether a simple, neutral geometric pattern on white or a brightly colored option like the one pictured, use upholstery to bring some Moroccan magic to the room.

Stenciled Furniture
Dress up any boring, white bureau with a colorful or delicately patterned stencil.

An Un-Diaper Bag
Who says diaper bags have to be soulless? Opt for a colorful Moroccan bag

Moroccan Mirror
Mirrors are an easy way to bring a bit of the Middle East into a room without being overbearing. This one would look darling in any nursery.

A Crib with Character
Rather than going with all straight lines, choose a crib that has a slight arch at the head and foot.

Hang Lanterns Instead of a Mobile
Swap out clunky plastic mobiles for a gorgeous silver lanterns hung high above the crib. Instant transport to Arabian kingdoms and sweet dreams.

Sink Toes Into a Soft Carpet
Sink little toes into an impossibly soft wool Beni Ouarain Carpet like one pictured is from West Elm.

Punched Lantern Nightlight
Rather than a plain old night light, this punched lantern throws gorgeous lights and shadows. It would make for sweet dreams AND easy midnight feedings.
