Lately, I’ve been asked by many people if we are going to try for a third child. After being incredibly fortunate to have two beautiful children, I am pretty sure my answer is no. Why?
1) I am enjoying my sleep (somewhat)
My kids were not great sleepers. We are now at a point where five nights out of seven, I am getting a decent nights rest and I’m not sure I want to give that up. I was a BEAR those first few months with both kids. Lack of sleep makes me cranky.
2) What if I end up with a colicky baby who cries all the time?
Other than the sleep thing, my children were really awesome babies. Their temperaments were fabulous and I don’t know that I want to risk ending up with a spirited baby when I have two other kids to take care of.
3) I really don’t want to do 2.5 MORE years of diapers.
I’m totally over diapers and I’ve got at least another year of them with Miss E. I wish kids could be born potty-trained. Is that too much to ask?
4) I have enough snot to deal with already.
The other day I tweeted “Why buy Kleenex when you have mom?” and got some great responses. But it’s true right? My kids use my shirt, pants, hair, face, whatever they can find and wipe their nose. Three kids doing that? No thanks.
5) I don’t want to be pregnant again. (Do I?)
My first pregnancy was quite wonderful when I reflect back on it, but my second wasn’t my favorite. I was nauseous through the beginning and incredibly uncomfortable at the end. There is a part of me that longs to feel a baby kick inside me one more time, but the part that doesn’t want to yarf is winning out.
In all seriousness, when my daughter was born, I had a sense of “my family is complete”. Now she’s at the age where I could totally contemplate a third. It’s a lot to think about, both emotionally and financially. I’m 98% sure that we’re done, but that 2% sure does like to tug at my heart when I’m looking at baby pictures of the kids.
Another BabyCenter writer, Stacie, recently asked if three kids was one too many? I’ve had plenty of people tell me that if you have two it’s not much harder having three, but I’m not sure I agree.
How did you know you were done?
