Is it my imagination or is the writer of this L.A. Times story, about a 33-year-old deadbeat dad named Desmond Hatchett who is infamous doe fathering 30 children with 11 different women, giving this guy a high five?
Just feast your eyes on the opening paragraphs of the story and you tell me we don’t have a serious and ongoing pervasive case of the double-standard-that-will-not-quit syndrome in this, our supposedly evolved society:
You have to say this much for Desmond Hatchett: He has a way with the ladies.
The 33-year-old Knoxville, Tenn., resident has reportedly set a Knox County record for his ability to reproduce. He has 30 children with 11 women. And nine of those children were born in the last three years, after Hatchett — who is something of a local celebrity — vowed “I’m done!” in a 2009 TV interview, saying he wouldn’t father more children.
According to the reported age of his oldest child, he “achieved this feat” see now I’m praising him too, in just 14 years. No woman could compete, obviously, with his record, unless of course, she had multiple sets of multiples.
But I am less interested in this man’s alleged plea to be released from child support payments, 50% of his pay gets distributed to the mothers of his children, than I am in the way the story is told and how differently it might be presented were it about a woman who had 30, or even 11, babies from 11 different fathers.
Would they call her a record setter? Would they say she has a “way with men.” Would she be considered a local celebrity?
I guess it’s the way the article takes on such a playful tone that makes you think they might be talking about a naughty child who can’t help himself:
“Yes, we’ve got several cases with Mr. Hatchett,” Melissa Gibson, an assistant supervisor with the Knox County child support clerk’s office, said with a sigh.”
“Under the law, there’s nothing officials can do to force Hatchett to keep his pants on.”
And it sounds like Hatchett, and his wayward penis, have been getting some attention for a while:
“Also in a TV interview, Hatchett tried to explain — in a PG-rated way — how he managed to end up with so many kids: ‘I had four kids in the same year. Twice.’”
I’m wondering if a book deal is coming next. Or maybe a reality show? To be fair, it’s not just the author of the L.A. Times article who idolizes Hatchett:
In this article Hatchett is described as having “too much luck with the ladies.”
But news anchor Brenda Wood redeems my faith in journalism.
“Step up, and for God’s sake zip up your pants!”
But, tell me, honestly, do you jump straight from criticizing this guy’s irresponsible behavior to “the women are just as stupid?”
I do.
But then I go back and think, Wait. This dude had sex with 11 different women, who knows how many other women he bedded who were either not ovulating or were more adept with contraception, yet each of these 11 women had sex, that we can be sure of, with just one man. How does that make them idiots?
But this post isn’t about who is the bigger idiot. It was meant to be about the deeply ingrained double standard that rears its head each and every time a the topic of sex comes up.
Is it fair for women to be held at such a higher, more holy, moral standard than men? Does it matter to you?
Lastly, a newer L.A. Times article casts some doubt on the accuracy of the story. Hatchett, apparently, is MIA.
