I had a Barbie when I was a kid. Actually I had Barbie, and Ken and Skipper– the flat chested one.
They had a Jeep that towed a pop-up camper. I’m pretty sure Ken always drove the Jeep. They also had sleeping bags, which I remember spending an inordinate amount of time arranging the dolls into. Sometimes Barbie and Ken slept together. Sometimes Barbie and Skipper. Sometimes Skipper and Ken.
I’m not sure if I ever understood who Skipper was. Was she Barbie’s little sister or was she Barbie and Ken’s daughter?
While I recall only ever actually purchasing one Barbie for my kids– I bought Isla a Barbie Mermaid doll– several Barbies, in varying states of neglect, have made their way into this house. Neither of my daughters have given them much attention.
What usually happens is Barbie catches their eye, they play with her for a while, they grow bored. Then, the desire to give Barbie a radical haircut hits, and her lovely locks get mercilessly lopped off and, without her fancy follicle powers, she becomes an outcast. I usually find her face down under the bed, or at the bottom of the toy box, almost always naked. It’s a bit disturbing.
But Barbie has made a surprising comeback around here: She’s found a job as a model for Esther, our resident fashion-designer in training. And she’s living the life. Since there is no Ken here, Esther has made Barbie a few escorts, so she doesn’t get lonely, out of wooden paint stirrers. Her hair, a severe pixie cut, occasionally changes colors but her most recent color, Sharpie blue, seems permanent. Too bad the hairdresser colored her face as well.
But the clothes she gets to wear are rather magnificent. Every outfit is an exclusive design made from recycled materials, including airplane socks and toilet paper tubes. Check them out:
