Meet Allison Dearstyne. This new mom lives in Dunkirk, Md., with her husband and baby Clara. Over the weekend the family flew to Australia and Allison and her daughter were photographed by Anne Geddes, the world-renowned photographer known for her pictures of infants in whimsical settings.
How did this all come about? Allison entered the Million Moms Challenge photo contest and sent in a photograph of her pregnant belly with the words “May You Stay Forever Young” written across it.
Over 450 women entered and wrote a meaningful message with five words or less on their baby bumps Anne was touched by Allison’s message, lyrics from a Bob Dylan song, and the new mom won an all-expenses paid trip to Australia along with a private photo shoot with Anne Geddes.
The really inspiring part of this story is that the contest helped raise awareness about mothers and children living in the developing world. The Million Moms Challenge is about engaging American moms with moms overseas “around the shared dream of a healthy pregnancy and a baby who will survive and thrive.” This contest attracted thousands of new members who donated thousands of dollars and generated thousands of tweets and Facebook posts. And this incredible movement of moms making the world a better place has already accomplished so much, from protecting 5,770 mothers and future newborns from tetanus to buying 20 community midwives bicycles so they can travel to their patients.
