By now you’ve probably seen the TIME magazine cover on attachment parenting that depicted Jamie Lynne Grumet breastfeeding her 4-year-old son. The cover caused quite a stir and conversations varied widely. Some wondered if extended breastfeeding “infantilizes children,” causing them to become too attached to their mothers and not able to fully develop, and many, many more just felt totally creeped out. Others didn’t knock the practice, but couldn’t see it for themselves, and some Dr. Bill Sears devotees swore by his seemingly unconventional methods of baby wearing, extending breastfeeding, and tending to your child’s every request.
The article—smarty released the week of Mother’s Day—had everyone talking and exposed, yet again, how judgmental moms can be.
Motherhood is hard work. We are tasked with protecting, teaching, nurturing, and loving our children, not just for 18 years, but for their entire life. And while motherhood has made many of us happier, wiser, more patient, and more companionate, often times moms make assumptions and question the parenting choices of other mothers, labeling them as a “good” or “bad” mother simply because their choices may not look like your own.
But why?
Considering we all struggle with similar challenges, I’d think other moms would be a welcomed reprieve against those who cannot or do not understand our jobs. But whether it’s some working moms judging the choices of stay at home moms (and vice versa), or moms of high achieving kids judging those who struggle in school, moms constantly make other judgments about other moms.
And I get it. I do it to, but increasingly I’m realizing that the things I react to most strongly in other moms are the things that highlight something that I’m concerned about in my own parenting style.
As yet another Mother’s Day approaches lets make a commitment not to judge the choices of our fellow mothers. Let us appreciate the strength, wisdom, and love we each have for our children and let’s make a pact to support each other.
Do you find yourself judging other moms? How does it feel when you’re judged by others?
