While some of us might still see her as the adorable teenage klutz on Disney’s Lizzie McGuire show, Hilary Duff is now all grown up and last month she became a mom. Duff and her husband, ex-NHL hockey player Mike Comrie, welcomed Luca Cruz into the world on March 20.
This seemed like the right time for BabyCenter to check in with the Hollywood star and yesterday I hopped on the phone with Hilary to talk about motherhood, work-family balance, and her most recent charitable project with Johnson’s Baby Cares and Save the Children.
The new campaign involves putting together more than 5,000 care kits filled with Johnson’s Baby products such as body wash, shampoo and soaps. When a natural disaster strikes, the kits will be distributed to families in the area.
Let’s get onto my conversation with Hilary…
Q. What has surprised you most about motherhood?
A. The amount of love you can have for someone so instantly. I have four dogs, who I love, and I thought it might be similar but it’s really much bigger than that.
Q. What kind of dogs?
A. A Burmese mountain dog, a yorkie, and two chihuahuas.
Q. You’re the owner of four dogs—an actress, a recording artist, an author. You’re actively involved in charitable campaigns. And now you’re also a mom. How do you juggle it all?
A. I don’t do everything at once. When I was writing my book [Elixir], I wasn’t acting or recording. I was just writing. Same thing with being a mom. When I’m with Luca, I focus on him.
It’s important to be present. Feeding every two hours, changing diapers. These things are repetitive but I try to be present because I know it all goes by fast.
Q. How will you be getting involved in Johnson’s Baby Cares campaign?
A. I’ll be helping assemble the kits. I’m excited!
Q. Do you use Johnson’s Baby shampoo?
A. I grew up on it and now I’m using it on my baby. That smell takes me back…
Q. Why did you decide to join this campaign?
A. Now that I’m a mom, I’ve been touched and inspired by initiatives to help other moms and babies throughout the world. So many children live in areas that are at risk for natural disasters. Each year, Save the Children responds to at least 30 crises globally—from the smaller, local events that we may not hear about on the news, to the larger, more extreme ones—all of which have a tremendous impact on babies and children, who are always the most vulnerable in these times.
Q. Who inspired you to get involved in charitable work?
A. My mom instilled that in me at a young age. At Christmas we used to adopt a needy family and bring them dinner and presents. As I developed a name for myself, my mom would tell me, “You have a voice and you need to use it for good.”
Q. Your mom sounds amazing. Does she live nearby?
A. Yes, she’s only 15 minutes from my house. She’s coming to babysit tonight so Mike and I can have a date night.
Q. Before you go get ready for your night out, anything you want to say to the moms at BabyCenter?
A. I love BabyCenter. It was my go-to when I was pregnant.
And I’ll add, I think it’s important to be compassionate to others and put yourself in their shoes.
