I hate being late.
No seriously. I H.A.T.E. being late.
When I used to babysit I would show up 10-15 minutes early and just sit in my car waiting for the appropriate time. Same for every job interview I’ve ever been on.
An old boss used to give me heart palpitations because she was never on time. NEVER. Therefore, if I was with her, I was never on time. It irked to me to my core. I did my best to try to speed her along, but to no avail.
Then I had kids.
I knew that I would have to chill out a bit with my “lateness” pet peeve. I knew that it would take me longer to get two kids out of the house.
And it does. Boy, does it ever!
I strive to be super early to things now. We sometimes get to preschool 15 to 20 minutes early because I just happened to have everybody ready. Shoes on? Check. Jackets? Check. Diapers? Check. Wipes? UH OH. ( Inevitably, I always forget something.)
If we are running late, then I do my best not to speed (since the kids are in the car) and curse under my breath the entire time. I can’t even handle being 5 minutes late. It stresses me out to my very core, mainly because (and I hate to admit this) I’m worrying what other people think. Lame. Especially because I figure MOST people will cut you a little slack when you arrive late in a frenzied, harried state and explain that the toddler spilled grape juice on his shirt, the baby blew out a diaper and the cat barfed all in the three minutes before you were supposed to leave the house.
Totally fabricated story, by the way. I wish.
