The morning started like any other road trip- with baby or without. I rushed around cleaning up, emptying the trash, folding the laundry, packing the car and packing some snacks.
At 9 AM sharp we were on the road to Rhode Island. Pre-baby we could make it in 4.5 hours on a good day, 5 on a bad. Now the trips take much longer, and I usually do them without Trig. Since it takes so much longer with Raffi, we visit less often but I stay longer. Trig joins us on the weekend.
This is how this trip went:
9:00 AM Departure
10:00 AM Raffi falls asleep without a peep
10:45 AM Massive traffic on the GW bridge – worse than Christmas week.
11:30 AM Raffi wakes up and plays quietly. We are still in traffic and he needs to eat.
11:45 AM Still in traffic
12 PM The meltdown begins.
12:01 PM I frantically Google map the nearest rest stop. It’s only 2 miles away.
12:03 PM The rest stop is closed.
12:20 PM The next one is closed too.
12:22 PM Silently curse the decision not to stop before the bridge
12:25 PM I get off the nearest exit to find a Dunkin Donuts. I use the restroom while holding the baby. I don’t buy anything. I feed Raffi in the car while trying not to let his head hit the steering wheel.
12:40 PM I put him back in his car seat. He screams. We drive 1 mile and I pull over again. I feed him more.
12:50 PM We inch one more mile back toward 95 N. He is still screaming. I stop and take him out of the seat again. We walk back and forth down a strip mall for 20 minutes. I regret not stopping at a cute cafe instead.
1:15 PM He is finally ready to get back on the road.
1:45 Meltdown #2 almost begins. I save it by holding my iPhone in the backseat and playing relaxing music on repeat. I also give him my bottle of water to hold.
2:00 PM He falls asleep after mumbling to himself. It sounds the same as when he has to use the bathroom, but I pretend I don’t notice. My arm is asleep and tingling from reaching to the back with the phone.
2:10 PM We’re in bad traffic for the 3rd time. I debate jumping out of the car to smell Raffi’s bottom and see if he needs a change, even though he’s asleep.
2:20 PM I haven’t gone more than one mile. I also realize I was ridiculous at 2:10 PM.
2:30 PM The road finally lets up and I cruise, going well over the speed limit.
4:00 PM We finally hit Cranston, Rhode Island. Like every car trip, even the really good ones, I say I’ll never do it again.
Despite what I say when I arrive in RI, I do it again one month later.
How are road trips for you? Fun? Stressful? Tell me everything.
