Sometimes I hate science. A new report in Pediatrics says, “Caffeine consumption during pregnancy and by nursing mothers seems not to have consequences on sleep of infants at the age of 3 months.” In plain English: Go ahead and have that coffee, bleary-eyed new moms. It won’t make your baby’s sleep any worse!
I wish someone would’ve told me that five years ago.
Instead, I listened to the experts and drank only a single cup of coffee each day, all through pregnancy and breastfeeding. By the time Harry was a week old, I was hallucinating from sleep deprivation, my brain a muddy minefield of soggy synapses. It got so bad I refused to drive, for fear of killing us both. A mid-morning cuppa joe might’ve kept me alert enough to function. (Heck, mid-afternoon and mid-evening would’ve been good, too.)
And coffee’s not the only thing I missed. Here is a short list of foods I avoided, either for myself or for Harry, on the advice of “experts”:
- Peanuts for me: A lactaction consultant confided that new research was about to connect the rise in peanut allergies to moms passing allergens through breastmilk, before their babies were ready for it. All through the fourth trimester, when peanut butter might’ve made for an easy meal, I abstained. The latest thinking? Exactly the opposite.
- Peanuts for Harry: Harry started at a Jewish preschool when he was 15 months old. There were a lot of Israeli kids, and in Israel one of the most popular snacks for wee’uns is Bamba—kinda like baked Cheetos, only with peanut butter instead of cheese. At the time, we were advised No Peanuts Before Age Two, so my poor little guy had to watch all his pals happily munching away. The latest thinking? Israeli kids have far fewer peanut allergies, most likely because they’re introduced so much sooner.
- Strawberries, egg whites, chocolate: When Harry was born in 2006, the thinking was to avoid all the most common food allergens until after the first year. The latest thinking? In 2008 the American Academy of Pediatrics gave us all a big “never mind.” Unless a parent or sibling has food allergies, anything goes.*
Lemme tellya, when I was writing my cookbook—with recipes for grownups, all of which can also be used for baby food—my head nearly exploded at all this new, contradictory research. It’s almost enough to make me want another baby, just so I can eat stress-free this time.
What new science makes you want to request a do-over?
* Except honey, which is considered a risk because of possible botulism exposure, not allergies. Wait until your baby’s a year old for this one.
