God gives no more than we can handle?

My daughter’s birth did not go to plan. It was not easy. It transformed my life – and not just because I became a mother. My life is almost nothing like what I expected. She is severely disabled. We adjusted our lives to accommodate her needs and our love for her.

Where was God in all this? Many people asked me, at the time, to turn to him. Only this weekend, a complete stranger offered the prayers of her and her entire congregation.

“Do you believe in God?” is a question I am asked frequently, whereas prior to her birth, I can’t remember ever being asked. I always say, “Yes” which is a lie. Or, at least an untruth. I don’t know what I believe and the waters are even muddier now, after her birth. I do wonder what the purpose of a “plan” for May would be. I came to the conclusion pretty quickly that there was no “plan” and I’d have to make it up myself.

The idea that God doesn’t give us more than we can handle, is one I find deeply offensive. It is difficult enough to believe in a God that would do, or allow, such pain and hardship to grace a baby. But, it is a profoundly selfish concept to believe that, when he did it, he didn’t give me more than I could handle.

He certainly gave my daughter more than she can handle.

This week the BabyCenter Community debated this issue. Moonmovingsoul set up a poll asking what people thought of the concept. At the time of this post, 285 people answered and 187 believe that it is BS.

Here are some of their thoughts:

I feel like people who tell me this just don’t want to listen to me, so they come up with some generic vague phrase they think will placate and comfort me.

I really hate that statement, I quite often feel like I can not handle situations, even when I get through them I know I have not handled it as well as I could have. We are not given anything, crap just happens, sometimes its a trickle and sometimes its a flood. No one is giving me anything, it just happens to be my life at that point and time.

I believe that God gives people more than they can handle all of the time. When an athlete is trying to build muscle, the athlete will exercise and push until the muscles tear and are built up. God purposefully tears up followers in the hopes that in the long term, faith will be built.

What do you think?
